Men's Health Week 10 - 16 June 2019
Updated: Sep 10, 2020
This week is a time to emphasise the importance of men’s wellness. It's reported that males often avoid self care because of the perception it is effeminate and stereotypes that only females use spa and beauty treatments. We know self care is much more than this.
Self care refers to activities that preserve and maintain one's physical, emotional and mental health. This includes activities that help us:
build and maintain confidence and healthy self-esteem
building and maintaining positive relationships
social inclusion - feeling engaged with the world
having the quality of life we want for ourselves
having meaning and purpose in life
experiencing and expressing our emotions
building tolerance and management of stress
Self care isn't just about pampering or luxury, it has to focus on the essentials we need to feel stable, healthy and happy. None of which is really dependent on your gender. Rather we see, because of perceptions or access, many people across the spectrum of gender miss out on the essentials to self care.
Since we all have a mind, body and soul let's break the stereotypes and show that self care is for everyone. Because looking after ourselves is going to improve our lives dramatically and we are worth caring for. Men included.
There are many free support organisations for men. One of them is MensLine Australia. They are a telephone and online counselling service for men with family and relationship concerns. For more info, go to MensLine Australia.
